Nexium Information

General Information
This database does not contain every known side effect, adverse effect, or drug interaction. If you have questions about your medicines, talk to your health care provider. This information is for educational purposes only.

How Drug Works
Nexium works by decreasing the amount acid made by your stomach.

How Taken
Esomeprazole is available in a delayed-release capsule and should be swallowed whole, not crushed, or chewed. The best time to take Nexium is at least 1 hour before a meal. If you cannot swallow the capsule, add one tablespoon of cool, soft applesauce to an empty bowl, open one esomeprazole capsule, and carefully sprinkle the pellets onto the applesauce. Mix the pellets with the applesauce and swallow the entire tablespoon immediately. Do not chew the pellets in the applesauce and do not save the pellets and applesauce for another dose.

Possible Side Effects
Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away: stomach pain constipation dry mouth change in taste headache diarrhea upset stomach gas

Warnings/Precautions
If your symptoms do not improve, or get worse, while taking Nexium, call your doctor. Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to esomeprazole, omeprazole (Prilosec), lansoprazole (Prevacid), or any other drugs. Tell your doctor if you have ever had liver disease. Do NOT stop taking esomeprazole without talking to your doctor.

Overdose
For emergencies, seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.

Drug Interactions
Tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially iron supplements or vitamins that contain iron, ketoconazole (Nizoral), digoxin (Lanoxin), and herbal products.

Missed Dose
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.

Storage
Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Keep Nexium in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children.

Pregnancy/Nursing
There have not been well-controlled studies using esomeprazole during pregnancy. Use only if clearly needed and if the benefit outweighs any potential risk. For nursing mothers, it is likely that esomeprazole is excreted in breast milk, so caution should be used in deciding whether to discontinue the drug or the breast-feeding.

More Information
Nutrient depletions with Nexium include Vitamin B-12, so ask your doctor about possible supplementation. Some foods and beverages can make your symptoms worse. Your doctor can tell you which foods you should avoid or eat only in small quantities.
